Why PicoSure® Laser Tattoo Removal Is a Great Option By Stephen Hardy M.D. on November 16, 2015

A woman with fabric around her hipsTattoos are an excellent mode of expression, and you likely have one or know someone who has one. Yet many times people get a tattoo and regret it years later. In some estimates, up to one-fifth of people who get a tattoo wish they hadn't in the first place. In the past, getting rid of that tattoo was easier said than done.

At Northwest Plastic Surgery Associates here in Missoula, we have helped a number of people remove tattoos that they wish they had not gotten. We use PicoSure®, a state-of-the-art laser tattoo removal system. Let's go over the basics in more detail right now.

What is PicoSure®?

PicoSure® is one of the most advanced laser tattoo removal systems on the market today. It is highly effective and rapid, helping people remove tattoos that they feel regretful about getting. Thanks to PicoSure®, numerous patients can have skin clear of ink again, even blue and green ink, which is typically the most difficult pigments to remove.

How PicoSure® Works

PicoSure® fires controlled laser light in pulses that lasts just one-trillionth of a second. When the laser energy comes into contact with the ink, the ink is broken up into multiple particles that are reabsored by the skin. The much shorter pulse of the PicoSure® laser makes it work much better than old laser tattoo removal technology.

This innovative laser tattoo removal system is a major step forward over the laser tattoo removal procedures of the past.

Ideal Candidates for PicoSure®

The best candidates for PicoSure® laser tattoo removal are people who have tattoos that they regret getting. In general, PicoSure® is ideal for fairer-skinned patients. Patients with darker complexions and skin tones may experience some lightening of the skin in the treatment area. Careful treatment and techniques can help prevent these issues. We can discuss this potential side effect during the consultation process and help determine if PicoSure® is best for you.

What to Expect During PicoSure®

During PicoSure® treatment, patients can expect a little bit of pain during treatment as the laser breaks up ink in the skin. The pain from treatment is generally less than other laser systems.

Multiple sessions of PicoSure® treatment will be required to entirely remove a tattoo, but patients will notice major changes in the darkness and visibility of the tattoo after each session of treatment.

How Effective Is PicoSure®?

As noted above PicoSure® laser tattoo removal is highly effective and more rapid than previous systems and technology.

In many cases, removing a tattoo only takes one-half to one-third the amount of PicoSure® sessions compared to other kinds of laser tattoo removal systems.

Black ink responds to the laser in a dramatic fashion, fading rapidly with each visit. Green, purple, and blue ink also responds well to PicoSure®. That said, reds, yellows, pinks, and oranges may be more difficult to remove, requiring the use of other laser systems to break up those pigments in addition to PicoSure®.
