Breast Reduction Surgery

Clinically referred to as reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction surgery is a reconstructive procedure that is employed to improve breast size and shape. By removing excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin, breast reduction surgery helps to alleviate problems commonly associated with overly large breasts, including:

  • Back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Restricted physical activity
  • Skin irritation beneath the breast crease
  • Sagging, stretched skin and a low breast profile
  • An enlarged areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) caused by stretched skin

Candidates for Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery can be performed on one breast (unilaterally) or on both breasts (bilaterally) of women whose breasts have fully developed. Good candidates for breast reduction surgery are healthy women who:

  • Do not have medical conditions that could impair healing
  • Are nonsmokers in good general health
  • Have a positive outlook and realistic expectations
  • Have specific goals in mind for improving body image

A consultation with Dr. Hardy is the first step in evaluating whether breast reduction is the right procedure for you. At our Missoula, Montana practice, we have had the pleasure of helping numerous women achieve better posture, reduce strain on their back, neck, and shoulders, and improve their self-confidence. If you are interested in breast reduction surgery, we can help.
