Chemical Peels
A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to smooth the texture of the skin on the face by removing damaged outer layers. It is most generally used to address facial blemishes, wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation but may also remove precancerous skin growths, soften acne facial scars and, in some cases, help control acne. There are three main types of chemical peels:
- Alphahydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic, lactic, or fruit acids. These are the mildest of the peel formulas and are used to treat fine wrinkling, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne.
- Trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Used in many concentrations, this is most commonly used for medium-depth peeling to address fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigment problems
