The team at Northwest Plastic Surgery Associates has proudly helped patients in and around Missoula achieve their aesthetic goals. Many patients have visited our practice for breast augmentation surgery, which enhances the size and shape of the bustline.

There are actually many applications for breast augmentation surgery. We'd like to consider right now how breast implants can be used to improve the appearance of breasts that are uneven.

Aesthetic Issues Caused by Asymmetrical Breasts

When a woman's breasts are asymmetrical, it can lead to a whole host of issues with regard to aesthetics as well as self-esteem.

Significant asymmetry may cause women to feel self-conscious about their appearance, limiting the kinds of clothes (particularly bathing suits/swimwear and undergarments) that a woman feels comfortable wearing. In fact, major asymmetry can lead to problems with finding a bra that fits right.

Breast Implants Can Improve Size, Shape, and Evenness

While many people associate breast implants simply with increasing breast size, the use of implants can vary. In fact, a number of patients have breast implants placed in order to improve the shape and contour of the breasts. In some cases, placing a breast implant can actually make asymmetrical breasts appear even rather than uneven.

How This Form of Breast Augmentation Surgery Works

A plastic surgeon carefully makes incisions on the smaller of the two breasts through which a breast implant is placed. Since the predominant factor is shape rather than increasing breast size, a large breast implant is typically not necessary in these procedures.

In some cases, breast implants are placed in both breasts in order to boost breast size, though the smaller breast or saggier breast will receive a larger implant to ensure evenness with results.

Good Candidates for This Breast Augmentation Procedure

The best candidates for breast augmentation surgery to address asymmetry are women who have breasts that are uneven who are in good health. Patients should be able to undergo surgery without experiencing any serious side effects or adverse health conditions. They should have realistic expectations about scarring and the recovery process.

Alternative Options: Breast Lift to Alleviate Asymmetry

Breast implants aren't the only option to consider for addressing asymmetry. In some cases, an ideal option to consider involves breast lift surgery. During a breast lift, excess skin and tissue is removed in order to make a sagging or drooping breast perkier. This is an ideal option to consider if the breasts are asymmetric as a result of one drooping or sagging more than the other.

It's also not uncommon for breast lift surgery and implants to be combined in order to achieve symmetrical breasts. There is a lot of versatility when it comes to addressing these kinds of issues.

Which option for breast enhancement would be best for me?

Not all patients are the same, and it often requires a consultation in person to really determine which method of treating breast asymmetry would be ideal. During a consultation at our practice, we will be able to assess your situation and also consider what your aesthetic goals are. We'll answer any questions you may have and address concerns as well to ensure that the final choice you make about plastic surgery is one with which you feel comfortable.
