Pre-plastic Surgery Checklist
Year after year, plastic surgery continues to grow in popularity. Patients commonly rely on body contouring procedures to enhance the figure, while they undergo facial plastic surgery treatment to rejuvenate and enhance certain facial features. However, it is also important that each patient do his or her part to improve the success of surgery. Here, we provide a pre-plastic surgery checklist that our Missoula, MT patients should refer to in the weeks leading up to their cosmetic treatment.
At Your Surgical Consultation
Preparation for cosmetic surgery begins at the surgical consultation. This is an important opportunity to ask questions and gather information that will help the surgical procedure and recovery go smoothly. Patients should be sure to check the following off their consultation “to-do” list:
- Bring a list of medications that are used. Be sure to discuss which prescription and over-the-counter medications are safe before surgery, and which should be avoided. Include any vitamins or herbal supplements in this discussion.
- Request prescriptions for any medication that will be used during surgical recovery.
- Obtain pre- and post-surgical instructions. These should be read over so that any questions can be asked in advance.
Days Before Surgery
It is good to be prepared for surgery well in advance. Early preparation can minimize stress and anxiety on the day of surgery. The following tasks should be completed in the days and weeks leading up to treatment:
- Make any recommended lifestyle changes. For example, refrain from smoking, adjust medication, and stay active.
- Have any post-surgical prescriptions filled. It is important to have these on hand prior to surgery.
- Purchase any additional supplies that may be useful during recovery, including ice packs, bandages, and extra pillows.
- Make arrangements to have a friend or family member provide transportation to and from the surgical procedure. It is also a good idea to have someone around to provide assistance during the first 24 hours of recovery.
The Night Before Surgery
It is normal to feel nervous on the night before surgery. However, as long as patients complete the following tasks, they should be in optimal condition for their surgical procedure:
- Pack a small bag for the hospital. Refrain from bringing credit cards, jewelry, or other valuable items.
- Shower
- Follow instructions regarding food and drink. Typically, patients should refrain from eating or drinking after midnight.
The Day of Surgery
There is little that needs to be done on the day of surgery. Final preparation steps include the following:
- Keep the skin free of make-up and lotion
- Remove all jewelry
- Dress in loose, comfortable clothing
- Take some deep breaths and relax
