Dr. Stephen P. Hardy and the staff at North West Plastic Surgery Associates are committed to investing in the highest quality technologies for non-surgical cosmetic procedures. For this reason, we are now offering PicoSure® treatments at our state-of-the-art Missoula, MT, plastic surgery practice. PicoSure® is a type of picosecond laser that can target tattoo ink and skin imperfections such as brown spots with a shorter beam of light than traditional nanosecond lasers. Compared to these older lasers, the PicoSure® laser emits pulses that work much faster and more effectively while causing less harm to surrounding skin. PicoSure® treatments are minimally invasive, but they still require expertise for great results as well as for safety. Laser tattoo removal works by fragmenting the ink particles that are suspended in the skin. The pigments that make up the tattoo absorb the light energy of the laser, which breaks them down. Over time, they are eliminated by the body and the tattoo fades. The treatment requires several phased sessions about seven weeks apart. The great advantage of tattoo removal with the PicoSure® laser is the power with which it can break up the ink. While the older type of laser tattoo removal uses thermal energy to destroy the ink particles by heating them (photothermal effect), PicoSure® creates a shock wave that shatters the particles (photomechanical effect). The resulting particles are smaller, so they are eliminated faster. Even green and blue ink colors, which are notoriously stubborn to remove, require only one to three PicoSure® laser treatments. The same tattoo typically requires several more traditional treatments.
Hyperpigmentation such as brown spots, sun damage, freckles, and pigmented lesions can all be treated with PicoSure®. Treatment works the same way as tattoo removal to eliminate the unwanted pigment from the skin. Many areas of the body can benefit from PicoSure® therapy, including the face, chest, hands, and legs. Like a traditional laser, PicoSure® can also be used to treat acne scars and wrinkles by improving the skin’s texture and appearance. Skin rejuvenation with PicoSure®, however, is more gentle than the intense heat energy that traditional lasers rely on. The result is more comfortable treatment, comparable results in fewer sessions, and less downtime.
PicoSure® has been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a safe and effective treatment. There have been no adverse events reported from PicoSure®. While treatment with traditional lasers for tattoo removal and hyperpigmentation have sometimes resulted in spotting or scarring, PicoSure® significantly reduces this risk when treatment is delivered by a qualified provider. Patients can decrease their risk and increase satisfaction with their results by seeking PicoSure® treatment from a board-certified plastic surgeon.
