DR. STEPHEN HARDY: The mastopexy procedure is a procedure done to elevate and tighten the breast, or as a lot of women like to say, make them more perky. Usually it's a postpartum or a woman who's had some kids, and they've breastfed the children, and the breast loses some volume, but the skin doesn't also go away. So they still have the same amount of skin, but less breast volume. So it tends to fall. Sometimes a woman, it occurs without having had children. It's just generally with age. And it bothers a lot of women. Again, a lot of women, it doesn't bother at all, but for those patients who feel that they want to restore a little bit of that elevation to the breast as when they were younger, there are several different ways to perform the procedure. The only downside of a mastopexy is that it creates incisions on the breast. Now, they're very strategically designed so they're minimally visible, but nonetheless, it is one of those procedures that will put some scars on the breast. But in the long run, the patients all come back and say, you know what, the scars have faded. I look fine. I'm very happy. And so it's an operation I enjoy doing. It's something that the patients I wouldn't think would like as much as they do, to be perfectly honest, as a man. But the women absolutely love the operation because they love the fact that they don't have to wear the bra all the time. It elevates their breasts and makes them just feel younger. They don't worry about sort of that warm feeling of the tissue rubbing against itself on the chest wall, that type of thing.
