Pediatric surgery involves the care of children. In general if the pediatric patient is one less than 18 years of age. Children are not small adults. They have very different physiology. They react differently to medications. They react differently in terms of their airway and how stable they are on the operating table. The focus of pediatric surgery is to correct abnormalities predominantly which are congenital, meaning that the child is born with the abnormality or from trauma. Little kids do get hurt. Little kids do fall down the stairs or fall off a porch, fall off their bicycles, are in car accidents. So, unfortunately, we do see our share of pediatric trauma. The world is difficult enough as it is. If you have a child who is born with a malformed ear, a malformed lip, a malformed mandible, it just creates another thing whereby they can be isolated in society, picked on by their peers. The pediatric surgeon can make a huge difference in a child's life.
